How to Paint and Reupholster an Old Chair
Instructions for painting an old chair:
- In order to get the paint to stick you will need to remove as much of the old paint or stain as possible. Use the palm sander to make the job easier. If your chair has a pattern or tiny places that you can’t get to with the sandpaper, a dremel tool can help. You may have to go down to the bare wood if it has many layers. This is necessary for the new paint to have a clean surface to adhere to. Be sure to wipe it down with a clean cloth to remove any dust from the sandpaper.
- Apply one to two coats of primer, letting it dry well between coats.
- Put one coat of paint on the chair.
- Give it 24 hours to completely dry before painting a second coat. Sand lightly between coats because high gloss paint needs a slightly rough surface or it won’t stick well. You can paint up to 3 coats if needed.
