DIY Colorful Cat Scratching Post
If you have cats, you know that they like to scratch things, whether it’s your couch or bed or your rugs. And if you’ve shopped for a scratching post so that hopefully they’ll scratch that instead of the furniture, you know how ugly they are.
I’m not sure why, but they just don’t make them pretty. I know the cats don’t care, but I do! If I’m going to have one sitting around my house, I’d like for it be be pretty and visually appealing.
Now you can easily make your own, and color block it if you’d like, using either nylon or sisal rope. Sisal is the better choice from a scratching point, but if you plan to dye your rope, then nylon will probably take the color better.
You’ll need these supplies:
- 18″ round wood circle
- 4×4 wooden fence post (about 20″ tall)
- drill and long wood screws
- white 4×4″ post cap
- white paint – or whatever color you want your base and post cap to be
- 150 ft of 1/4″ nylon or sisal rope
- dye – your color choice
- bucket and salt (to dye the rope)
- staple gun (or hammer and small nails)
- colored electrical tape – same colors as your dye, to match the rope
